Italy Is Phasing Out Coal Too

by Sami Grover: By 2025, Italy will have weaned itself off of the nasty black stuff, apparently…

Awaken

We already knew that Italian energy giant Enel was going to phase out coal and eventually go carbon neutral. Now Cleantechnica reports that the entire country is committed to going coal-free by 2025.

That’s a pretty big deal, and means Italy will join the ranks of countries including the UK, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Canada and Finland, all of whom have made serious, near-term commitments to phasing out coal.

True, as pointed out over at Cleantechnica, many questions remain about whether such rapid phase-outs can happen on time, but the end goal has been set and the timetable allows for no delay in starting making progress. That means investors, utilities, power generators and coal mining operations will all be adjusting their plans as future market share looks even flimsier than it already did.

And just think, not so long ago almost everyone was predicting a coal boom for many decades to come. Keep that in mind next time someone tells you that oil demand will not peak for decades.
